Rovaniemi Tours, Safaris & Tickets

Northern lights, huskies, reindeer, snowmobiles, Santa and the best day trips — chosen, sorted and ready to book.

In most cities, tours are optional. In Rovaniemi they are the trip. You cannot drive a husky team, cross a frozen lake on a snowmobile or find a gap in the clouds at midnight on your own — and the operators provide the transport, the guide and, crucially, the thermal clothing.

Below are 36 experiences we have selected from the several hundred on sale, grouped by what you want to do. All are live GetYourGuide products with real reviews. Prices are indicative “from” prices in euros; they rise in December and around New Year, and almost every snowmobile price assumes two people sharing a machine.

When to book: for travel between early December and early January, and in the February school holidays, reserve the activities you care about as soon as your flights are fixed. Most can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours ahead, so there is little risk in booking early.

Northern lights

A minibus chase gives the best odds because the guides drive to clear sky. Shorter campfire evenings suit families; snowmobile and ice-floating versions add an activity to the wait.

Rovaniemi: Northern Lights Tour with Guarantee & Photos

Rovaniemi’s most-booked aurora tour, with well over 4,000 reviews. Instead of waiting at one fixed spot, the guides study the cloud and solar forecasts and drive — sometimes a long way — to find a gap in the weather. The listing carries the operator’s guarantee if no lights are seen; check exactly what it covers before you book.

  • Guides drive to wherever the sky is clearest
  • Photos of you under the aurora included
  • Operator’s sighting guarantee — read the terms

Rovaniemi: Northern Lights Photography Tour with BBQ Option

A shorter, cheaper evening for those who do not want to be out until the small hours. You are driven away from the city lights to a lakeside or forest camp, where the guide helps you photograph the sky while a fire keeps everyone warm. It stays in one area rather than chasing clear skies, so pick a night with a good forecast.

Rovaniemi: Arctic Ice Floating and Northern Lights Tour

One of Lapland’s strangest pleasures: you are zipped into a waterproof, buoyant survival suit and lie back in the icy water of a forest lake, weightless and — surprisingly — warm. With no lights for kilometres, it is a fine place to watch for the aurora. No swimming ability is needed.

  • Float in a hole cut in a frozen lake
  • Dry rescue suit keeps you warm
  • Look straight up at the night sky

  • A glass-roofed igloo to yourselves
  • Lappish menu

🕒 30 minutes 📍 From Husky park, Santa Claus Village ⭐ 4.7 (1,587)

Rovaniemi: Santa Claus Village Husky Ride

The simplest way to try a husky sled: a short ride on a forest loop at the kennel inside Santa Claus Village. It is over quickly, but it suits small children and anyone fitting a ride around a village visit. Slots sell out in December, so reserve ahead.

  • No transfer needed — it is at the village
  • A musher drives; you sit in the sled
  • Meet the dogs afterwards

Huskies & reindeer

Choose a husky safari by distance — five kilometres or more if you want to drive — and a reindeer visit by how much time you want with the herders. Combination days cover both.

Booking tours in Rovaniemi: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Which Rovaniemi tours should I book in advance?

Husky safaris, northern lights tours and anything in December. The icebreaker cruises from Kemi have very limited capacity and should be booked first of all. In January and March a few days’ notice is usually enough.

Are these tours refundable?

Most GetYourGuide activities offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. The exact policy is shown on each listing before you pay.

Is winter clothing included?

On most safaris — snowmobile, husky, reindeer and many aurora tours — operators lend thermal overalls, boots, mittens and, where needed, helmets. Check the “includes” section of each listing, and wear your own warm layers underneath.

Do I need a driving licence for a snowmobile?

Yes. The driver must be an adult with a valid driving licence, which you may be asked to show. Passengers do not need one. Children usually travel in a sleigh pulled by the guide’s snowmobile.

What happens to a northern lights tour if it is cloudy?

Chase-style tours drive, sometimes for hours, to find clear sky; fixed-location tours go ahead regardless and may see nothing. Some operators offer a free second attempt or a refund if no aurora is seen — read the conditions carefully, as they differ.

Are safaris suitable for young children?

Reindeer sleigh rides suit all ages. Short husky rides are generally fine from about three or four. Long snowmobile safaris are less suitable for small children because of the cold and the hours involved. See Rovaniemi with kids.

Is hotel pickup included?

Usually, from hotels in the city centre and often from Santa Claus Village. Properties further out may need to make their own way to a meeting point; check the listing.
