SantaPark

Santa’s home cavern, deep inside a hill

SantaPark calls itself the home cavern of Santa Claus, and it really is a cavern: the park is blasted out of the bedrock inside Syväsenvaara hill, and you reach it down a long, sloping tunnel. It opened in 1998. Where Santa Claus Village is an open-air site of shops and operators, SantaPark is a single, ticketed, indoor attraction where everything is included.

That makes it the natural choice for families with small children on a very cold day, and for anyone who finds the village too commercial. Its drawback is its calendar: it opens only for limited seasons, chiefly from November to early January with a shorter run in summer. Check the opening dates before you build a day around it, and buy tickets in advance for December.

What to see and do: SantaPark

Elf School

Children — and willing adults — attend a short class taught by the elves, learning elf skills and a few secrets of the trade. Graduates receive a diploma and an elf hat. Sessions run through the day; several languages are covered.

Mrs Gingerbread’s Bakery

A warm, spice-scented kitchen where you decorate your own gingerbread biscuit with icing. Hot drinks and pastries are sold here too.

Cross the Arctic Circle underground

The Arctic Circle passes through the cavern, and a marked line lets you cross it some 50 metres below the surface. Certificates are handed out to prove it.

The Ice Gallery

A chilled chamber of ice sculptures with an ice bar and the Ice Princess. Warm capes are lent at the door.

Santa’s office, the elf show and the Magic Train

Santa has an office here as well, generally with shorter queues than in the village. The elves stage an acrobatic show several times a day, and a gentle train ride trundles through scenes of the elves at work — a hit with the youngest visitors.

How to get to SantaPark

  • SantaPark is on Tarvantie, about two kilometres from Santa Claus Village and nine from the city centre.
  • Local bus 8 to Santa Claus Village passes nearby in season; check whether your departure stops at SantaPark. A taxi from the centre takes 10–15 minutes.
  • Combined tours that visit both the village and SantaPark with hotel pickup are sold on GetYourGuide.

Insider tips

  • Allow three to four hours. The ticket is valid for the whole day, and in the main season often for two consecutive days — confirm when you buy.
  • It is a steady, comfortable temperature inside, so you will want to shed your outer layers; cloakrooms are provided.
  • It suits children of roughly three to ten best. Teenagers and adults without children generally prefer the village and the outdoor activities.
  • Do SantaPark and Santa Claus Village on the same day only if you start early — each deserves several hours in December.
